theopistomology
09.22.05 (8:35 am)   [edit]

friend of mine named ref posted this on a forum and it was so thought provoking i thought id share it here.

It seems to me that no matter what philosophy or religion one adheres to, it basically outlines a perspective, and concludes with "now look at the world this way". With Christianity we're presented with a historical narrative, statements about the nature of humans and their relationship with God - and are commanded to believe, to live this out as our ultimate frame of reference.

Whether its postmodernism, secularism, naturalism, capitalism, liberalism or nihilism its always the same - "Here is a way to consider the world, now consider it that way".

It seems that in all these things, truth (whatever that may be) is secondary to belief. Sure, it says "this is true, now believe", but the "now believe" is always there. I think in this way epistemologies are less about whats true, and more about finding a story to live out.

I don't think its possible to look at Christianity as if it were one option among many - it is the only option. The attitude that Christianity is one option among many is an ism of some sort in just the same way as Christianity is. And the same goes with others too - I'm not free to adopt philosophical naturalism, to do so would amount to rebellion of my beliefs. And the alternative is true - which is why I think it is naive to pretend that certain proofs or whatever would result in a change of beliefs. Religions and philosophies arent about facts, they are about being frames of references - they are beyond the factual and the ethical - they just say, this is the way things are, now believe.

Its always about persuasion, never about reason when people change philosophies.

now compare/contrast this with what cs lewis said in his essay on miracles from God in the dock:

Experience by itself proves nothing. If a man doubts whether he is dreaming or waking, no experiment can solve his doubt, since every experiment may itself be part of the dream. Experience proves this, or that, or nothing, according to the preconceptions we bring to it.

in essence i think they are talking about epistemology from two very closely related angles. ref dismisses reason as a means of actual knowledge and lewis dismisses experience - and i believe they are both right. it seems quite obvious that both of these are flawed means of truly knowing anything. both are subjective to the point of error. descartes may have proven to himself that he existed but he may as well have stayed in his oven for all that realization is worth in light of our inability to actually know anything else. we know nothing. in fact we know less than nothing. if we actually knew that we knew nothing that would be something – but we dont.

it seems the only possibility of true knowledge then is God himself so i echo isaiah 26:8 'o lord, i have waited for you eagerly; your name, even your memory, is the desire of my soul.'

wish the planets out of place

wait for him to call.

cleave the novas from their space

pray for him to fall

sing the melody of harm

rage alone inside

sound the signal fire alarm

smokecloud fill the sky

paste the letter on the wall

scribble out your name

find it written in a stall

thoughts go down the drain

love the weatherman for days

puddles in the yard

hate the sun and all its rays

picking at the scars

give the money to a fool

watch him drown his pain

push against a sovereign rule

welcome it again

dye the colors of the pride

kneel before the cup

with the wafer just inside

better throw it up

waste another loathsome year

giving life away

remind family not to fear

before it fades to grey

kiss the doorframe when you leave

wont find this path again

endure the spiritual sieve

take the time to mend

wake the morning free at last

sweet relief will come

turn the page and start the fast

this world is not your home

when the angels fall
09.14.05 (9:55 pm)   [edit]

So high above the world tonight
The angels watch us sleeping
And underneath a bridge of stars
We dream in safety's keeping
But perhaps the dream
Is dreaming us
Soaring with the seagulls
Astride the backs of eagles

When the angels fall
Shadows on the wall
In the thunder's call
Something haunts us all
When the angels fall

Take your father's cross
Gently from the wall
A shadow still remaining
See the churches fall
In mighty arcs of sound
And all that they're containing
Yet all the rugged souls
Looking for their lost homes
Shuffle to the ruins
From the leveled plain
To search among the tombstones

When the angels fall
Shadows on the wall
In the thunder's call
Something haunts us all
When the angels fall

These are my feet
These are my hands
These are my children
And this is my demand
Bring down the angels
Cast them from my sight
I never want to see
A million suns at midnight

Your hands are empty
The streets are empty
You can't control us
You can't control us anymore

whispering devotion
09.08.05 (11:11 pm)   [edit]

sweep me aside

brush me off

dismiss me

im still right here

kicking screaming

suffering your silence

cast me away

knock me down

crucify  me

im still right here

knocking seeking

carrying your violence

push me under

spit me out

banish me

im still right here

kneeling praying

And when He had taken some bread and given thanks,

He broke it and gave it to them,

saying, "This is My body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of Me.
