Interesting new direction you've got going here. What do you call it?

So, why are these children emaciated, starving, empty? If we cared more, could we in America surely provide food for them? Is it because of oppression of the Third World by the greedy West? Do those in charge of their government prevent the needed food and supplies from reaching them? Does the lack of rule of law, where they live, prevent these people from having their basic needs met? If these kids were in an oil-rich region, would America suddenly care more for them? Are the people of other developed nations giving as much, or more help than America?

Just some questions coming as I sit at my computer, eating a snack and enjoying my comfortable home.

You sound a little defensive Pastor Dave...was anyone really blaming America? I believe that you have a lot of good points--we send tons of aid that never gets to the people who need it because their own government prevents it. No one is asking you to feel guilty...but maybe you could put down your snack long enough for a second thought or a shred of empathy. I know that you were trying to make a point, but that kind of quick response is why conservatives such as myself get tagged as not having compassion.

this is not about america. where youre born should not decide whether you live or whether you die.

Right you are. Sometimes I rattle off a quick response, without doe consideration and very little heart. Guilty here.

I agree. I'm just making a point, already evident, that much of the hunger in our world is because of issues other than the lack of compassion of the West. It is very sad that a person would starve to death. And we need to give more, seek to help more. Especially those who claim to love others should seek to help. My comments may sound a bit callous, but if we could talk a bit, I would hope that you know that is not my heart.

its not that i think youre callous. its just that im still reeling from the way you reacted to my comment on the girl at your door and subsequently ran over my last comment to your blog with sarcasm.

First of all- my sarcasm... It's there. I try to control it, but sometimes it just comes out. It's not necessarily bad, for some of the greatest writers and commentators use sarcasm with tremendous affect. But, poorly used sarcasm or inadequately communicated sarcasm comes across mainly as someone who is, er... a "smart ass". So is that what you are saying, that with you I have been a SA? Duly noted.

Now, I feel that you have unfairly judged me, unkindly labelled me, on the basis of my response to this lady. I continue to believe I reacted understandably, even appropriately, given the circumstances. As I remember, you responded with a scripture quotation- no elaboration, just a Bible verse. I took offense to that. But in response, I used a scripture quotation. I could have quoted many others, but I think it is ridiculous for fellow believers to be beating upon one another with their Bibles.

You really do not know me, other than what I imperfectly and partially choose to reveal in this grand forum we call blogging. I don't think you can judge the basic goodness or godliness of me with such a limited view. So, you disagree with how I dealt with the situation. I say, give your comments and let me respond, and then let's move on. Later, no doubt, we can again discuss the issue from other perspectives through other posts.

And, I guess, I'm a bit injured by your quick willingness to end our communication just because I've disagreed with you, and done so a bit forcefully. It's the specific issue that I disagree with, and not who you are.

Does it help if you were to know that, yesterday, I bought a nameless traveller a tank of gas, or that I am in the process of getting my church to help a man pay $400 worth of bills, or that I give money to homeless men even when I knew many will most likely use it for booze? I'm not bragging- I'd much rather do my giving in secret, and receive any rewards from God instead of man.

Finally, I'm a sinner and sometimes a very poor minister/pastor. There's little reason for you to be 'reeling" by what I say. Just call me a SA, chuckle, and move on!
