inerrrrrrancy
09.14.06 (9:40 am)   [edit]
i havent been able to figure this out. maybe someone can help me. in recent discussions with some inerrancy people they keep making the claim that inerrancy is a result of gods sovereignty - that he sovereignly protected the original writings from any error. the problem i have with this is two-fold. first - if inerrancy is such an important truth why didnt he protect the originals from destruction? and second - if inerrancy is such an important truth why didnt he protect the copies from error - why do even our earliest manuscripts differ? for the record - i believe the scriptures are inspired by god but do not accept inerrancy.

I'm with 69 whisper on this one.

But then I don't think God wasted his time trying to help determine the way men understand him. No God who loves us would be quite so crytic, and since I think God DOES love us, it's no great stretch for me to accept that MEN tried to make the Bible a good and helpful thing, but since, in fact, it was men (and women, of course) passing on the way THEY had come to understand God, the errors are both (a.) not surprising, and (b.) easily acceptble, and (c,) subject to the same error rate as any other thing that comes from the heads and hands of well meaning but flawed men.

As for dealing with people who believe the inerrancy thing? Good luck. Like talking to a wall, albeit a really faithful wall.

oops... please remove the word "both" from the above comment, or maybe it will be corrected in one of the subsequent translations.

Inerrancy is a myth, a philosophical position that scripture never supports. The truth of the matter is that a sovereign God protects his infallible word, and can even use a dumb ass to proclaim his message. ;)

Hmm...you've got me thinking about this one. I believe that God in His sovereignty sends His word out to those that would hear. And He makes sure that those that are listening for His word are able to understand it. In other words, He adapts it to the language that the individual understands. The inerrancy lies not in God's very word, but simply within those that are partakers of His word. We should be reminded that His word is living and breathing. Father, please pour Your wisdom out over us that we may better know Your will, ways, and word. Amen.
